The last few years have seen some really high quality racing at Ampton and this weekend’s meeting looks like it could provide spectators with another competitive day’s action.  A total of 78 entries have been taken across the six race card including some high class horses from the stables of Alan Hill, James Owen, Andrew Pennock and Francesca Nimmo

The meeting kicks off at 12 noon with the 9yo & up Conditions race. This is usually a competitive race and this year’s renewal looks to be no different. Stand out entries include the classy Glint of Steel who despite his advancing years was still seen winning last season, Local Show from the Sarah Humphrey yard who has already run three times this season including a win at Barbury Castle and a 3rd in a very high class race at Cottenham last time, and the James Owen trained Vivaldi Collonges who was just 1 length ahead of Local Show when crossing the line second in that same race at Cottenham.

The Mixed Open, due off at 13:10, looks as though it could go the way of the Alan Hill trained Broken Eagle if the ground dries up enough for him. The last time Broken Eagle was seen at Ampton he walked over in a Men’s Open but he will surely face rather stiffer opposition this time from the likes of Mahlers Spirit, trained within sight of the track by Andrew Pennock who rarely leaves Ampton without a winner or two, and Lord Toppper, a fascinating new recruit to the James Owen yard. Still only a six year old and with some nice form over hurdles he could be one to keep an eye on.

The remaining races on the card all look to be competitive affairs, particularly the intermediate race in which we could see the exciting Mister Robbo who has won his restricted this season already and was just touched off in an intermediate at Clifton-on-Dunsmore last time out.

Point to Pointing is always a great family day out and Ampton provides a wonderful atmosphere, superb viewing for spectators as well as trade stands and a public bar. The track is easily accessible, just off the A134 (Bury St Edmunds to Thetford road) at Ingham. Entry is £10 per adullt and under 16’s go free!!
