Saturday 14th April @ High Easter nr Chelmsford

Essex

Major Louise Burnell swapped military uniform for jockey silks to make a fairytale winning debut in the saddle and land the East Anglian Area Feature Race, the £1000 Baileys Horse Feeds Warwick Vase, at a superb Essex Point-To-Point at High Easter, near Chelmsford, on Saturday.

Although the going was very soft, meaning that the second last fence had to be bypassed owing to a treacherous patch of ground, the sun finally came out and a massive crowd enjoyed shirtsleeve conditions and seven competitive races.

Burnell is second-in-command of the Royal Engineers based at Chatham in Kent. She had previously ridden in three charity flat races but at the age of 38 was competing over steeplechase fences for the first time as she guided Don’t Do Mondays to an eight length defeat of Follow The Paint.

Don’t Do Mondays is trained by Libby Lawson, who was uable to attend as she was nursing a poorly day-old foal at her base at Bilsington Priory in Kent.

It was another good day for Thetford-based trainer David Kemp, who took his tally for the season to eight with a double courtesy of the highly promising youngsters Caryto des Brosses and Law Of Gold.

At six years old, Caryto des Brosses  was less than half the age of two of his six opponents in the two and a half mile Conditions Race. Yet, despite having never won a race of any kind until two months ago, he barely came off the bridle in scoring by a resounding five lengths.

Law Of Gold is a year younger than his stablemate and looks a horse to follow judged by the style of his inaugural success in the Open Maiden. Given an extremely patient ride, he was the one horse on the entire card to conjure a burst of speed after the final fence, quickening up beautifully to sneak past Racing Eagle and Elderon d’Airy.

Kemp’s day could have been even better but for Welsh’s Castle coming down at the fourth last when still in contention in the Intermediate Race. This left Keel Over, trained in Buckinghamshire by Michael Kehoe, to come home seven lengths ahead of the only other finisher, Aunty Joan.

Both Kemp’s winners were ridden by Dale Peters, from Sawtry in Cambridgeshire, who actually celebrated three victories on the afternoon as he is also the trainer of You Too Pet, hero of the three and three-quarter mile Countryside Alliance Race.

Ridden with some elan by novice pilot Harry Thorpe-Codman, enjoying just the third win of his career, You Too Pet came round the entire field going up the final hill before getting the better of a duel up the run-in with Mr Maclennane by a neck.

Another young rider seen to good effect in a tight finish was Kate Gowing, from Mulbarton near Norwich, as she coaxed Midnight Bliss to a half length defeat of Blackwood Rover in the Restricted Race.

Trained at Wymondham by Caroline Fryer, Midnight Bliss is turning into a commendably hardy individual and made it two wins and three seconds in her last five starts despite not being fully at ease in the testing conditions.

As has happened for each of the previous seven years, this fixture was rounded off with a victory for owner-trained Nigel Padfield, from Abridge, near Epping, in the Essex Hunt Race.

Just like in 2016, the horse responsible was Excitable Island, who passed the post seven lengths in front under Jack Andrews and may run next at the hunter chase evening at Cheltenham on May 4th, at which he has been placed twice before.
