Monday 5th May @ Northaw- Enfield Chace with Cambridgeshire

Reports

Bridget Andrews maintained her challenge for a first National Lady Riders Championship with a brilliant treble at the Cambridgeshire with Enfield Chace Point-To-Point at Northaw, near Potters Bar, yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday).

She took her seasonal tally to 20 – precisely double her previous personal best – with victories aboard Volcan Surprise, Excitable Island and Hunts View to  move two clear of Yorshire-based Jacqueline Coward at the top of the standings.

In terms of quality, Volcan Surprise was the pick of the trio as he was winning an Open race (the Ladies) for the first time. He began 2014 as a maiden and has now become a five-time scorer.

His was another triumph for the red hot Wymondham trainer, Caroline Fryer, who teamed up with Andrews to make a successful raid on Peper Harrow, Surrey, with Saveiro on Saturday and also combined with a second Wymondham resident, jockey Rupert Stearn, to land the four-mile Mixed Open at Dingley in Northamptonshire on Sunday.

Excitable Island cannot quite match the laurels of Volcan Surprise but, trained at Abridge in Essex by Nigel Padfield, he has enjoyed a wonderful season as his impressive Club Members Race victory here – achieved in the fastest time of the day – was his third of the campaign.

Hunts View, trained by Andrews’ father, Simon, completed the treble after a thrilling tussle with My Brother Pat in the closing Maiden Race. My Brother Pat made much of the running and rallied gamely after the last to close to within a head of Hunts View as the pair crossed the winning line.

There was another close finish in the Confined Race as Elvis The King, representing the Cowlinge, near Newmarket, father and son trainer/rider combination of John and James Ferguson, made all the running. He looked set for a comfortable victory only to tie up on the run-in and eventually scramble home by a neck from Stearn’s mount, Desertmore Valley.

Rosie Thorogood is in pole position to clinch the County Linen Services East Anglian Novice Lady Riders Championship after guiding Frankie Anson to a decisive six length victory over Bluegun in the Novice Riders Race.

Thorogood is set to marry Frankie Anson’s trainer, Ed Turner, from Ampton near Bury St Edmunds, later this summer.

The day’s only non-East Anglian winner was Remind Me Later, trained near Ashford in Kent by David Phelan, who was two and a half lengths too strong for the perennial bridesmaid, Wila, in the Restricted Race.
